Stephen Gaghan Set to Script ‘Dead Spy’ - Hollywood Reporter

How does an ambitious talent like Stephen Gaghan go from penning an Oscar winning screenplay for Traffic, followed by Syriana, to drafting a slicked-back McG spy-flick that’ll likely do little more than retrace the Bourne trilogy? How many zeros in the answer? Looking past this Dead Spy Running, which Gaghan will adapt from the as-yet-unpublished novel from John Stock, he’s still thinking over the screenplay for his film treatment of Malcolm Gladwell’s 2005 book, Blink.

An additional, seven-figure payoff will come from a recent ABC deal calling for Gaghan to write and exec produce a pilot for an hour-long series.  Some of his earliest work aired on the network in the nineties when he turned in a couple scripts for NYPD Blue and The Practice.

The Cut with Janie Bryant, the emmy winning costume designer for long-lost friend Deadwood, now behind the wardrobe of Mad Men:

What are some of your inspirations?
For every project — it doesn’t matter whether it’s contemporary or period — there’s so much research that goes on, because I really like to get into the heads of all the different characters. But for Mad Men, specifically, I collected a lot of magazines, like Ladies’ Home Journal to European Vogue to American Vogue and Time and Look.

How about for specific characters?
Well, Betty Draper (January Jones) is so Grace Kelly to me. She really embodies that style. Don Draper (Jon Hamm), he’s sort of like a combination of Cary Grant to Gregory Peck, and Joan I think is Sophia Loren, Marilyn Monroe, and Jayne Mansfield.

Here’s the trailer for Party Down, the new comedy from Executive Producer Rob Thomas (and others). The voiceover is a bit weird but I think the cast is fantastic.

Previously: An early look.
